Veronica persica (Persian speedwell) and Veronica polita (Gray field speedwell) are plants which bloom in early spring in fields, gardens, and lawns. The flowers of each are very similar, and V. polita may often be overlooked, assumed to be the more common V. persica.
V. persica has larger flowers, which are greater than 8mm wide. The flowers of V. polita are less than 8mm wide.
The calyx lobes of V. persica taper gradually to an acute and rounded point. The calyx lobes of V. polita come to a sharp point.
The leaves are similar, though the leaves of V. persica are larger.
The seed capsule of V. persica is flattened with wide notch and hairs rarely glandular. The capsule of V. polita is rounded with notch 90 degrees or less and mix of glandular and eglandular hairs.
